Mixing & mastering

Why a track sounds weak next to a release, and what fixes it inside Live: level, glue, loudness.

Fix the signal path before chasing loudness

A quiet or harsh mix is rarely solved by one limiter setting. The difference may begin with arrangement density, excess low end, an unintentional routing path, gain into a processor or a playback platform applying loudness normalisation. The fastest fix is to establish where the level or balance changes.

This hub treats mixing as a series of comparisons: level-matched bypass, reference tracks played through a controlled path, mono and low-volume checks, and exports re-imported into Live. Mastering guides distinguish peak level, dynamics and integrated loudness so that a number does not replace listening.

Before adding another processor

  • Confirm the master and reference use the same monitoring path.
  • Remove unintended clipping and low-frequency buildup.
  • Match perceived level before judging tone or width.
  • Export a controlled section and compare it inside the same project.

Platform targets and Ableton device behavior can change. Every numerical recommendation is dated, sourced and framed as a target for a particular delivery context.
