MIDI & beats

Notes and drums that do not sound like a grid: transforms, chance tools, velocity and groove.

Program timing and variation deliberately

MIDI can be perfectly aligned and still feel unfinished. The useful question is which kind of variation the part needs. Timing offset changes placement. Velocity changes emphasis. Groove applies a reusable timing and dynamics pattern. Note Chance and Velocity Deviation introduce controlled variation between repetitions. They are related tools, not interchangeable “humanize” buttons.

This section covers note editing, Drum Racks, the Groove Pool, transformations, generators and routing between MIDI tracks. Guides describe whether an operation is destructive, selection-based or recalculated on every pass, because that determines whether the result stays predictable during arrangement and performance.

Build from intention

  • Use quantization to correct a specific timing problem, not to flatten every note.
  • Shape accents before adding random variation.
  • Apply groove as a comparison, then commit only when the pattern is settled.
  • Keep generated material small enough to edit; abundance is not arrangement.

Live 12 MIDI tools vary by edition and release. Each guide names the exact tool set it covers.
